Ireland over 60s triumph at International tournament

Our over 60s side emerged as deserved winners of a 4 nation tournament held at Boldmere St Michaels Stadium, Sutton Coldfield. The ground holds special memories for quite a few of the players who made their international debuts here in 2022.

We started with an excellent performance to beat England 2-1 with a brace from ‘Walking Miracle’ Brendan Mulcahy. Who needs Gary Mathews? 🤣

A comfortable 4-0 victory over Celtic Nations followed. John Rogers made his debut and goals from Frank Kiernan and a Mulcahy hat trick saw us home.

The 3-2 win in our next game highlighted the grit and resilience of the side. Twice behind to Wales, Ireland fought back with goals from Mulcahy, Kev McGarry and Frank Piledriver Kiernan.

The final was a tight affair against a determined England side. Ireland broke the deadlock with a Mulcahy penalty after the opposition accrued five infringements. England equalised soon after and with the game heading for penalties up stepped big Frank Kiernan to smash home the winner with the last kick of the match, a fitting way to win any trophy.

The event raised a considerable sum of money for the What’s Behind the Smile mental health charity.

The trophy was presented to our own Dan Deery, just out of hospital after a painful illness.
